This image shows our analysis of 29 new potential coronavirus cases, all of which are associated with the Diamond Princess cruise ship quarantined in Japan. (CNN) -- For the first time, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has declared a coronavirus outbreak in the United States, saying a patient with the virus is "likely infected during travel from Wuhan, China." In a statement released late Thursday, the CDC said an individual on the cruise ship in Japan has tested positive for the coronavirus and another with close contact with that individual has symptoms of the virus. "The fact that this patient is the same age as the index patient, and that the patients have a history of travel from Wuhan, China, to the US, increases the likelihood that they were infected on the cruise ship," the statement said. The individual who tested positive for the virus is in serious condition in a hospital in Seattle, and has no significant travel outside of the US. The patient who is in the "presumed infected" stage has mild symptoms, including fever and cough, and has been placed in isolation, according to the CDC. The agency said the second individual who may have been exposed to the virus is in stable condition, but is in isolation. "We do not know the exact day that the individual became ill," the CDC statement said. "They did not appear to have symptoms of illness until they were on the cruise ship with other passengers who were also ill with the virus." The agency said it's monitoring more than 100 people who had close contact with the patient who tested positive, and the contact individuals who are showing symptoms of the virus are being closely monitored for illness and are being treated. The CDC said it's following protocols to protect health care providers, patients, and the public. The agency stressed that the new virus is not "severe," and that people should be calm and take precautions such as washing their hands.
